Did you know—we are dedicated to supporting students’ educational journeys. We collaborate with Carleton University, Algonquin College, and Durham College, providing hands-on learning experiences that enhance students’ academic and professional development.
Annually, we host and support approximately 8–10 Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) students, 3–5 Social Service Worker (SSW) students, and 2–4 Master of Social Work (MSW) students in our office. Additionally, our Meet You In School program assists about 20–25 college and high school students each year, fostering their academic and personal growth.
By mentoring these students, we are not only shaping their future careers but also ensuring a robust pipeline of skilled professionals dedicated to supporting youth. Through these initiatives, BBBSO is committed to empowering students and preparing them to make a meaningful impact in the lives of young people.
Meet a few of our current students!
Patricia
Patricia, a 49-year-old mother of two adult children, is a dedicated student in the Social Service Worker program at Algonquin College. Passionate about helping others and advocating for those who can’t advocate for themselves, Patricia (she/her) brings a wealth of personal experience and empathy to her work. “I’ve always known about BBBSO. I wanted to work with youth who needed support and advocacy,” she shares. Her own traumatic childhood fuels her desire to be the supportive adult she once needed, striving to make a positive impact on young lives.
During her placement with BBBSO, Patricia has thrived, gaining invaluable experience and insights. “I feel very fortunate to have done my placement with BBBSO. I have learned so much here. EVERYBODY here is so supportive in learning and life!” she exclaims. Observing her colleagues’ interactions and problem-solving skills, Patricia has become more open-minded and has honed her writing and case note skills, crucial for her future career. She aspires to specialize in assisting youth and parents with the transition from foster homes and coping with temporary separations, aiming to find meaningful employment in this vital area.
Grace
Grace is a Master of Social Work student at Carleton University, originally from Southern Ontario. Moving to Ottawa six years ago to complete her Bachelor of Social Work, she enjoys spending time with her dog, travelling, reading historical fiction, and scrapbooking. Passionate about mentorship, Grace has seen firsthand how it empowers youth and is dedicated to creating inclusive environments where everyone can reach their full potential.
At BBBSO, Grace has gained valuable experience in program administration and implementation, crucial for her career goals in program development and facilitation. “The BBBSO team is extremely hard-working, dedicated, and compassionate; it has been a meaningful experience working with and learning from them,” she shares. A highlight was facilitating a workshop on supporting neurodivergent youth in employment and post-secondary education, refining her skills in workshop development and facilitation. Grace aims to work with neurodivergent youth in educational settings, creating accessible spaces with equal opportunities for all.
Nadia
Nadia is a social service worker student at Durham College with a background in retail management. Originally from the east coast, she has lived in the area for about ten years and enjoys film, traveling, and crafting. Nadia is passionate about working with youth and the 2SLGBTQ+ population, which led her to the BBBSO and their Prism program. She was drawn to BBBSO for the affirmation and autonomy they provide to youth in their programs.
BBBSO has significantly supported Nadia’s education and career growth by offering practical, hands-on experience and opportunities to engage with the populations she aims to serve. She has developed skills in encouraging client participation, conducting interviews, planning events, and facilitating workshops. Inspired by the dedication and compassion of the BBBSO team, Nadia hopes to continue working with youth, youth with disabilities, or the 2SLGBTQ+ community in the future, recognizing this placement as an important stepping stone in her career. Nadia shares, “Working with the BBBSO team and seeing how dedicated and compassionate everyone has been very inspiring to me.”
