FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Ottawa, ON, August 29, 2024 – In celebration of Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) Month, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ottawa (BBBSO) has set an ambitious goal to match 30 youth on our waiting list within 30 days. The new “Mentorship Equals” campaign aims to show our community the importance of mentorship for young people and our organization’s dedication to fostering and empowering these life-changing relationships.
“Mentorship has the power to change lives. By setting this goal, we are not only aiming to create opportunities for youth but also to reinforce the incredible impact that caring community members can have,” said Susan Ingram, Executive Director of BBBSO. “We encourage the community to get involved—whether through donations or volunteering—to help us reach this important milestone and change the lives of young people across Ottawa.”
Mentorship is a transformative experience, with youth in these programs being 60% more likely to report consistent happiness, 45% more likely to feel confident, and 90% feeling fully supported by their mentor. BBBSO calls on the community to help reach this goal by making donations, which will directly support moving 30 young individuals off the waiting list and into meaningful mentorship relationships.
Throughout BBBS Month, there will be supporting events including the eQ Homes Big Tee Off charity golf tournament on September 18th for BBBS Day and the Barrhaven Harvest Fest on September 8th, where community members can show support in person.
These efforts underscore the impact of mentorship, as 72% of mentees report their mentor helps them achieve goals, and 85% feel heard and valued. BBBSO invites the community to join in creating brighter futures for Ottawa’s youth by supporting this important initiative.
