Maria’s journey with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ottawa (BBBSO) began during her student placement in the Mental Health and Addictions Counselling program at Algonquin College. It was during this time, particularly in facilitating the “Indigenous Connections” workshop, that Maria’s appreciation for mentorship and community grew. After completing her placement, she transitioned into a Mentoring Coordinator role, where she now plays a pivotal part in fostering meaningful mentor and mentee relationships.
For Maria, one of the most rewarding moments in her role is witnessing the first meeting between a mentor and mentee. “It’s such a special experience” she shares, “It’s also a chance to help both the mentor and mentee understand how the program works and the positive impact it can have on both of their lives.” The initial meeting is just the beginning of the journey that Maria is passionate about supporting.
Behind the scenes, Maria ensures that regular check-ins with mentors, mentees, parents, and school liaisons maintain the strong, supportive relationships that are central to the success of the program. “These check-ins allow me, as a Mentoring Coordinator, to build meaningful connections with everyone who plays a role in the life of the mentee.”
Reflecting on her own journey, Maria would tell her younger self to embrace growth, accept failure, and learn from mistakes. “Without mistakes, we wouldn’t know how to handle them in the future,” she says. This perspective shapes Maria’s passion for working with youth, as she is dedicated to fostering meaningful connections. “As a Mentoring Coordinator, I’m able to witness firsthand how having a mentor can truly make a difference in both the lives of the mentee and the mentor. It’s incredibly enjoyable to see these relationships grow and evolve.”
Looking ahead, Maria is excited about the opportunity to continue making a meaningful impact. “There’s a lot of potential for growth, both personally and professionally, and I’m eager to contribute to the ongoing success of BBBSO.” She’s especially looking forward to participating in the events organized by BBBSO. “I’ve had the honour of witnessing these events, and the positive effects they have are truly inspiring.” Maria is proud to be part of BBBSO’s mission to empower youth and create lasting change in young people’s lives, and she’s excited to see what the future holds in her work with the organization.
