We are excited to introduce our Mentor of the Month, Philip! For Philip, becoming a mentor with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ottawa (BBBSO) was a decision rooted in self-reflection and a deep desire to give back. Having had many mentors and role models throughout his own life, he felt a strong pull to follow in their footsteps and provide the same kind of support to someone else. BBBSO’s focus on one-on-one mentorship resonated with him, making it the perfect fit.
Since becoming a mentor, Philip has felt the impact of this experience in ways he never imagined. “Not wanting to sound cliché, but I can honestly say that this experience has given as much to me as I hope I have been able to give to my Mentee,” he shares.
Philip’s roots run deep in the Ottawa region—his ancestors on his father’s side were among the first immigrants to settle in Wakefield, Quebec. With such a strong family connection to the National Capital Region, giving back to the local community feels even more meaningful.
One of Philip’s favourite ways to spend time with his Mentee is by attending sports games together. Thanks to BBBSO and the generosity of donors, they’ve had countless opportunities to share in their mutual love of sports.
When asked about a particularly memorable moment, Philip finds it impossible to choose just one. Instead, he describes a powerful feeling that comes from simply spending time together—whether it’s sharing a meal, listening, offering advice, or being a source of support. “It’s difficult to describe, but knowing that these moments can have a profound impact on a young person’s life has, at times, brought me to tears.”
Through his time as a mentor, Philip has learned a valuable lesson from his Mentee: the true meaning of strength and resilience. “My Mentee has faced more challenges than I ever had to endure in my childhood, yet he perseveres—almost always with a smile on his face. He is an amazing young man, and I admire him greatly.”
For those considering becoming a mentor, Philip has one piece of advice: “To quote Nike—Just do it. Yes, it takes time and effort, but we are always choosing our priorities and making time for what’s important. The impact you can have on a life, on a community, and how this experience will positively impact your own life makes this a win-win-win situation. I strongly encourage it.”
Thank you, Philip, for your dedication and for being such an inspiring mentor!
